Trump Blasts Biden and Harris, Calling Them ‘Mentally Disabled’ in Fiery Speech

By William J. Furney

In one of his most controversial and scathing addresses yet, former US president Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on the current administration during a campaign rally, focusing his ire on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump, well-known for his inflammatory rhetoric, made a series of unfounded claims about the mental capacities of both leaders, including an explosive statement that has shocked political observers: “Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country.”

The comment, which immediately drew sharp rebuke from both political analysts and the public, was made during a rally on Sunday that saw Trump railing against a wide range of topics including the ongoing immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border, economic issues and alleged corruption within the Biden administration. The speech served as yet another indicator of Trump’s relentless campaign strategy, seeking to paint the current administration as incapable, corrupt, and out of touch with American values.

A Dark Campaign Speech
Trump’s speech, delivered with his usual firebrand style, was filled with dramatic assertions aimed at energising his base ahead of the upcoming elections. His claim that the country has been left in a dire state under the leadership of “mentally impaired” individuals resonates with his narrative that America is in decline, something he frequently attributes to his political opponents. The use of such dehumanising language against both Biden and Harris has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many accusing Trump of making ableist remarks and further deepening political divisions.

In the same address, Trump also criticised the state of the US under Biden’s leadership, blaming the administration for the influx of migrants at the southern border and accusing them of allowing crime and chaos to flourish. He described Biden as being “mentally impaired” due to his age, a line of attack he has used repeatedly throughout his campaign. But the most surprising barb was aimed at Harris, whom Trump said was “born mentally disabled,” a statement that has been widely condemned as both derogatory and baseless.

Stirring Up Controversy
Trump’s speech has added fuel to an already heated political landscape in the US. Critics slammed the former president for employing divisive and ableist rhetoric to score political points. The term “mentally disabled,” which Trump used to describe both Biden and Harris, was denounced as harmful, especially given its history of being weaponised against individuals with disabilities. Advocacy groups have called on Trump to retract his statement, labelling it as an affront to people with mental health conditions.

Trump’s defenders, however, argue that the former president was using hyperbole to criticise the perceived failures of the Biden administration. They insist that Trump’s comments, while provocative, were meant to highlight what they see as the incompetence of the current leadership.

Escalating Tensions Ahead of the Election
As the 2024 presidential election draws nearer, tensions are escalating between Trump’s MAGA movement and the Democratic Party. Trump’s latest remarks underscore his willingness to engage in confrontational and personal attacks, a hallmark of his political career. His speech also focused on topics such as the handling of inflation, law enforcement and the US’ chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which he cited as evidence of Biden’s inability to lead.

“How could you allow this to happen?” Trump asked during his speech. “Only someone who doesn’t have control of their mental faculties could let this happen.”

Though Biden has maintained high approval ratings among his base, Trump’s remarks are expected to harden divisions in an already polarised political environment. With immigration surging as a hot-button issue and economic concerns persisting, Trump is positioning himself as the strongman capable of returning America to what he calls “greatness”.

Fact-Checking the Claims
Trump’s assertions, including his claims about the mental health of the president and vice president, are not grounded in any evidence. Biden, at 81, is the oldest president in US history, and his age has been a point of concern for some voters, and eventually led him to withdraw from the presidential race. However, medical reports have consistently shown Biden to be in good health for his age. Similarly, there is no basis to Trump’s allegation that Vice President Kamala Harris, who is 59, was “born mentally disabled.”

The former president has a long history of using nicknames and personal attacks as part of his campaign strategy, including calling Biden “Sleepy Joe” during the 2020 election. These tactics, while effective in galvanising Trump’s base, have raised questions about their impact on the broader electorate and on the tenor of American political discourse.

A Campaign Strategy Built on Fear?
Trump’s continued focus on fear-mongering rhetoric, including painting his political opponents as mentally unfit, is reminiscent of his 2016 campaign. By presenting the current administration as inept and out of touch, say political analysts, Trump is seeking to capitalise on voter frustration with economic woes, high inflation and the border crisis.

Analysts suggest that Trump’s ability to mobilise his base rests on his skill in stirring up outrage. His remarks about Biden and Harris are not just attacks on their leadership but attempts to frame the future of the country as a choice between competence and chaos.

But some experts warn that Trump’s increasingly extreme language could alienate moderate voters who are tired of hyper-partisan rhetoric. As he prepares for what could be a fierce election battle, Trump is clearly betting on his divisive style to secure victory.
